One Day Build: Headphone Holders

I didn't have a good way of storing my headphones and not enough deskspace to just leave them laying around. Ideally I'd make a wall mount version so I could mount them to my bookshelf (as I ended up doing in the photo above). Quick check on Amazon reveals what I already thought: they're all terrible. The problem with the little hooky ones is that they apply all the hanging pressure in the middle of the headphone band, which causes warping over time. Also they look like cheap bathroom hangers (because they basically are), so that's no good.

This is 9am or so.

Modelled in Blender, sliced up in 123D (the best kept secret in free software for industrial designers). Laid out on flat sheets for laser cutting. I made a few versions with different slice patterns. Threw them on a flashdrive.

Had this 3mm baltic birch plywood kicking around the shop so I ran it threw the table saw a bunch and made 8" strips so I could fit it in my car. Drove the my friendly local laser shop.

Ended up needing to cut it again so it fit in the laser bed but no worries. Quick chop saw action there. It tends to sear awkwardly but we dialed in the laser intensity nicely with a few tries. Cut fine.

The shop also had some acrylic scraps kicking around, so I cut one of each version in acrylic as well which looks super cool.

By noon I had these assembled and feeling pretty good. Stopped off at Lowe's on my way home and grabbed some of those 3M wall sticking Velcro strip things? You know, the ones for hanging heavy picture frames. They hold like 4 lbs each, which is more than enough.

In the end, not a bad morning build! They work great and exactly what I needed.
A look at the two different ways to slice the same shape. As a volume, these are identical forms.
Before glue - as you can see that one piece isn't slid in quite all the way.
