vista is a project in a book format. The project is a reflection on sight in the contemporary era, specifically on modern people’s capability to see things. In “vista” I travelled around the world using Google Maps. I used a display mode that corresponds to a virtual eye, a mix of satellite images and 3D modelling. Visual perception, already numb to some kinds of images, can’t make a connection with them. Therefore, while inspecting images of places on Earth, error and distortion become the opportunity to realize the existence of each and every place itself. Errors make the place perceivable – and thus existing – to the sight. In the book, I used captions as a metaphor of an identity finding process. That is why, in the first page, the caption is hidden under the image. Then it runs on the edges of the page, to finally set below the image, thus symbolizing its gained identity.
Furthermore, the book can serve as a flip book to animate captions.
This project has been edited under the supervisionof Luca Capuano and Simonetta Scala at Spazio Labo'.
