Lantern Journal Cover Art

Lantern Journal
Cover art for art journal
Lantern Journal is a project showcasing the works of some forward thinking writers, photographers, and artists. I was approached to create a cover image for their first issue.

I began the design by thinking about a lantern and what it does and I wanted to do something with the nature of light and what we can and can't see. The design ended up being a representation of the electromagnetic spectrum and what penetrates to the earth's surface. The bottom (the waves) are sea level and the numbers on the left side are kilometers above sea level. From left to right the spectrum goes: Radio, Microwave, Infrared, then the middle is Visible Light (hence the rainbow color treatment), followed by UltraViolet, X-Rays, and Gamma Rays. The negative space is where those rays cannot penetrate the Earth's atmosphere.
