Coffee X

Mission Statement

Coffee is apart of many human beings daily life. For most coffee drinkers, the experience of making the drink allows for them to begin their day or to make them feel awake. Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day, equivalent to 146 billion cups of coffee per year, making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world. Coffee represents 75% of all the caffeine consumed in the United States. This is an experience shared among most people, even astronauts.

On the International Space Station(ISS) Astronauts live, breath and exersice in a small environment for around six months. This experience of living in space is shared among  three to ten people in the ISS research facility which is approximately 356 feet (109 meters) by 240 feet (73 meters), or slightly larger than a football field. This research facility must hold all of the equipment nessary to conduct research and experiments. It also needs to house, feed and exersice the current astronauts. This means that all of the equipment used at the ISS must meet energy efficient standards, prioritize crew/research needs, and take up the least amount of space.

We plan to address the experience of making and drinking coffee. Our design solution will create an easier, space efficient and more reliable experience for the astronauts staying at the ISS.
