Mussy-Mossy is a concept design of an outdoor playscape for Positivparken at Frölunda Torg in Gothenburg.
Positivparken stretches over 44,000 square meters. The triangular green area is shaped by Frölunda Culture Center, a group of massive residential buildings and a high school. Next to the local shopping and cultural center, Positivet Park attracts residents from not only populated Västra Frölunda but also Gothenburg centrum. There were a few worn-out play equipment and a playground spread over the park among lawns and bushes. We made field study in the snowy winter when the park looked quite lonely, distant, empty and a little bit depressing.
"How to make such a large area alive so even grown-ups want to play?" was the question came into my mind. I attempted to bring an identity to the park and encourage people to play.
Mussy-Mossy goes through the whole site as a series of play stations connected by tactile pathways. Inspired by microorganism like moss, lichen and mushrooms even puddles in the woods next to the park, the colorful playscape is given various forms and tactility. The graphical patterns can be easily seen from a distance. The slightly raised up sculptures invite people to interact. Symbolic elements from the playscape climb up to the residential buildings and the tram stop. A part of the playscape was built in 2012 at Positivparken.
