Although it was technically an assigned project, we were given the chance to choose our own text and format, so I chose one of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. Tom makes multiple appearances in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, during which he becomes familiar with the infamous Hobbits on their way to Mount Doom. I wanted to explore the ways in which Bombadil (who is suggested to be older than time itself) plays such a mighty role in these three-foot-high adventures, so I chose to make a book slightly larger than tabloid size with very intimate and delicate type within. There are also wicked forces at work during their encounters which is why I mixed a classic serif typeface with the more modern feel of Univers, giving stark contrast between the two forces at play. Even though this project was held to a tight deadline of two weeks, I had loads of fun making it.
