Design & Image — Semiotic Flash Cards

Signs and symbols are seen everywhere and has become the system of how people understand things. This project was to understand and research the study of semiotics and how it is applied in design. The chosen semiotic terms – index, code, icon, and symbol – had to be defined in the simplest way so it is easily understood, and create visual interpretations that aid in explaining the definition of the semiotic term.
Index
The world is a diverse community that is made up of different cultures, ethnicity and religious backgrounds. We are able to distinguish people of different backgrounds because specific traits and traditions of a culture indicates which part of the world they may come from. This is the concept I designed around for the semiotic term index.
Code
Code is a language; a series of information shared and understood among people that needs to be learned. The buttons of a game controller perfectly conveys this idea as one would not be able to play the video game if they do not understand what each button (represented by the individual shapes) will do.
Icon
The Statue of Liberty is one of the world's most famous landmark. Though the graphic is minimal with bare amount of detail, you are able to immediately recognize it because of the close resemblance of the elements specific to the Statue of Liberty; the raised arm holding a torch, the crown and the book. This landmark is iconic to New York that it becomes universally recognized.
Symbol
The image does not only show a smaller sized elephant knocked out of a larger one. However, the connection between a smaller elephant in a larger elephant creates a relationship that leads one to think about the idea of mother and child. The mother and child relationship symbolizes the idea of family, love and protection, thus the representational image.
