Communicating complex data in visually compelling ways
The book The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward R. Tufte, changed the way I approach the design of information graphics. Tufte's essays on how to communicate statistical and quantitative data challenge designers and writers alike to judiciously display information in ways that enhance the viewer's experience, not detract from it. Below are some of the pieces I've worked on in this highly creative and important aspect of visual design.
This interactive map was designed for the Renaissance Society of America's Annual Meeting in Venice, Italy. When clicked, the pushpins for each of the twelve locations had a pop-up window featuring a photograph of the site and important contact information, enabling the attendees to easily get from one lecture to another. The online version also had a zoom feature to better see smaller street names and addresses. This map along with twelve close-up versions for each of the locations, were included in the RSA's Annual Meeting Guidebook, a 750+ page directory of courses and commentary.
