Mediating Culture: Harlem Edge
Harlem Edge Competition Entry
The goal of this project is to mediate culture by creating a gateway into Harlem. We recognize that Harlem’s greatest asset is it’s culture. This space will therefore serve as both a water transportation hub to bring people to the area, and a performance/gathering space and media wall for them to interact. By bringing these two programs together this site will act to find a common ground of artistic inspiration and a point of interaction between cultures that have been seen as intimidating and inadmissable.

Through this, the site will mediate a learning discourse between two currently estranged cultures. Within this interaction Nourishing NYC can assert itself into this rich cultural discourse by also partnering with local restaurants recreating healthy, local dishes. In this way, the site can foster healthy eating as an integral part of a revitalized Harlem culture. As the last waterfront site, this area must be rededicated to the Harlem community to celebrate and stimulate its rich cultural expression.
