Alpine Shoe Design

Using inspirations gathered from experiencing the fashion design influences of Berlin, Germany and the beautiful alpine landscapes and automobile industry designs of Munich, Germany, 12 students selected from the Rhode Island School of Design collaborated with the innovative shoe design school, SLEM, and the leather designers at Stahl in the Netherlands.
We used the experience of footwear design as a way to more deeply understand and expand our own personal design process. Textile Design was a very necessary skill set needed for this specific experience. Having the background knowledge in different material making and design very much assisted my footwear design development.
Traveling to apparel studios, factories, historical sites and museums, taking in different visual and cultural aesthetics while using the readings from Leonardo Da Vinci's methods of creative introspection really helped to inform our design process.

We used sketchbooks as visual and reflective journals that encompassed the entire experience of traveling through Europe and also as tool to practice insightful daily exercises to advance the design process for our footwear designs.
