Visualizing Music

This installation initially derived from studying MIDI files. MIDI files are only a conveyor of information and contain only performance data. When input into a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) piano roll reader, one can only see the pitch, duration, and volume of each note being played. When the pianist is in control of interpreting the musical score, peripheral information such as dynamics, tempo, key signatures, and intensity are lost in the visual representation. How can design principles such as color, contrast, and abstraction be used to visually reveal and augment these peripheral expressions? This installation presents visual explorations of three contrasting piano pieces that are translated using a set of visual rules and relationships.
