Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by the way cities are built and planned. I love to study the progression of how a city starts and how they develop into the places we live today.

In 2001, my family moved from downtown Ottawa into a new subdivision being built between farmland and forests. Back then, our house was one of the first houses built in the area and so I’ve been able to watch an entire neighbourhood of thousands of people spring up around us. As a seven year old kid, I was more interested in watching the buildings being built, and all the dump trucks and cranes involved.

As I grew older, I became more aware about what was actually going on around me, and the impact suburbs have on the natural environment around them. This area in particular is located around huge forests and vast fields and farmland. With these images, I wanted to capture the interaction between the built area and nature itself. Each image reflects the symmetry and the mass production aspects of suburbs in their composition and framing.
