My final collection of dobby woven samples was inspired by this Japanese shifu kimono at the RISD Museum. Woven with recycled paper and overdyed with indigo, the kimono has small nubs on the surface where the original writing on the paper can be seen. Inspired by this idea of hidden stories woven into fabric, I incorporated phrases of poems that have been influential to me. Some of these snippets are difficult to read clearly. I wanted to capture the transition of time that it takes for one to reveal his or her personal stories; in other words, the time it takes for a stranger to become a close friend. I wanted to visually depict this transition of time and trust through hand-dyed color gradations and complex, layered surfaces. A group of these samples were shown with the shifu kimono in the Designing Traditions exhibit at the RISD Museum.
