The idea of project ‘Falta(Deficiency)’
has started from my life long interest in vintage and antique goods.
Aged articles are always intriguing and make me wonder about stories they may carry behind.
I wanted to investigate them and build a story base on that.
I looked around my house and gathered vintages and antiques.
Some were passed down from my parents’ family, others were from my own collections.
After selecting a number of items,
I started researching their back grounds
with a few evidences like the name of brands or design distinctive.
And I learned how long the journey must have been before they arrived at this small country in far east.
These old instruments,
cuff’s rings and gloves must have been someone’s belongings at one point
but now the owners are all gone and they traveled so far around the globe.
Then a word ‘ Deficiency’ came across my mind.
Possession, loss and deficiency…
I wanted to exchange the view of lives and philosophy in them with viewers by doing this project.
오래된 물건을 보고 있으면 그 뒤에 숨겨져 있을 이야기와 세월에 대해 상상하게 된다.
작업에서 빈티지, 엔틱과 함께 주제로 삼았던 또 하나의 요소는 제목에서 언급된 ‘결핍(Falta)’이다.
오래된 물건들은 저마다 다른 이유로 부족한, 결핍된 요소들을 가지고 있다.
이는 또한 우리, 사람들에게도 적용된다.
그 상징적인 의미로, 등장하는 주인공 5인의 이름 첫 자를 f/a/l/t/a 의 순서로 짓고
다른 시대와 다른 지역에서 각자 다른 이유로 결핍의 요소를 지니고 산 인물들이 자신들도 모르게
서로 연결되는 한 세기에 걸친 이야기를 만들어 ‘전혀 상관없어 보이는것들 사이의 연관성’을 이야기해 보고 싶었다.
실제로는 존재여부조차 몰랐던 서로지만 그들의 책상위에 놓여 있던 평범한 물건이
멀리 떨어져 있는 서로를 묶어주고 그로인해 세상은 돌고 돌며 순환된다는 연결고리에 대한 이야기.
완벽한 허구이지만 보는 이에게 누군가의 일상을 들여다 보듯 몰입할 수 있도록
최대한 실제같은 이야기를 만들어내기 위해 각 인물의 결핍요소나 성격, 가치관, 시대에 대한 디테일에 신경을 썼다.
인물의 개성을 보여주는 필체, 캘리그래피와 각자의 삶을 대변하는 같은 크기의 테이블을 연출하였으며
결핍과 연결에 대한 나의 생각과 작품을 보는 관객의 시각이 만날 수 있기를 바란다.
과거가 흘러 현재에 이르는 이야기를 다룬 본 작품을,
언젠가 미래에 과거가 되어있을 오늘에 가장 보편화 되어있는 컴퓨터를 이용해 만든 의도는
작품을 통해 하고자 하는 나의 이야기의 마침표에 속한다 할 수 있다.

I decided to make up 5 total strangers
who were born in different eras and different parts of the world
from early 1900 to today linked by everyday used articles.
Because the articles themselves carry long stories within,
I wanted to set each table as simple as it can be.
So the theme of this project,
‘A correlation of seemingly unrelated objects or perhaps people’,
can stand out clearly in each shot.
The initial concept was inspired from
an art work called ‘Fictitious Dishes’ by Dinah Fried,
the artist took photos of simple set dishes in bird’s eye view
and I thought that contemplative view would work the best for what I wanted to say with this piece.

This fictional story
is about cycle of lives and their accidental links
through a century connected by ordinary articles which became antiques today,
and I used computer program to put the works together to give a thoughts about a contrast of the past and the present.
