CUBES

lesson of creating the form by subtraction of material

This project was all about learning:
1. How wood is being processed in the sawmill.
2. How to work with tools to create form by subtraction of the material.

We begun the project with a trip to a sawmill. We would pick up the timber for our projects there and see the process of cutting wood into planks, drying and sanding it.

After sightseeing the sawmill we discussed the ideas for our objects/sculptures to see how much material we need and then cut proper amount for each project.
Then we transported the wood to our school and begin working on it. We were using both hand and power tools. We started with using chainsaw to cut the most of the material and afterwards electric planer, grinder, sanding machine.

I decided to go for simple cubic form 45x45cm. Go from organic shape of wood to geometric. Cubes could be used as stools (separately) or coffee table. I attached rubber wheels to make the cubes easy to move.
