Loci photography & typeface

The LOCi project investigates uniqueness by exploring a local (versus global) context within design, typography and editorial design - drawing on research I have asked how design can draw on local and regional visual ideas to re-present ideas to re-present ideas for new audiences utilising the language of photography, illustration and typographic design.
The loci typeface exhibition.
I join in this exhibition and designed a font showed in gallery.

primary research
I photograpyed this pictures to show the local life. Wooden doors and windows explana the simple and turely life. On the other hand, I find people mount the railing on the windows, it is also a society problem.people did not believe each other. There are many estrangement between neighbors.
I observed there are many security window in Dalian. Every security window is different, they have interesting patterns.
This image is a Chinese vernacular door. This pictures record the local daily life. They representation the community and culture in society.I photographed it near my university.

development
At first, I used the shapes of windows, vertical and horizontal strightly lines to design. I try to use positive and negative shapes in this font. Letters are positive and windoews are negative, but it is too messy. So I use one white line to take the place of iron wires on window. Then I adjust the position of the white line.
This is a the final outcome, I named it “neighbour. This typeface is useful for posters, book covers, branding even animation design. In addition, neighbour font is fit for laser cutting because it is intact after cut.
