Scan the most successful single letter study you made for assignment one. Working in Adobe Illustrator,reduce the letter to 1 – 2 inch tall and make multiples of your letter. Begin to arrange these letters to create at least 10 distinct patterns. Explore the abstract qualities of your letter form and experiment with the relationships that develop between positive and negative space. Push yourself to go beyond obvious solutions and 90 degree angles (remember hypnopaedia). From these sketches choose one pattern to bring to completion that abstracts the initial letter form with the most success.
For every sketch, you may use each letter at one size only. Letters can touch, but not overlap and the letter forms can not be altered in any way. Work with rotation, rhythm, triads and quads, and even combining two patterns. See how much you can push the pattern to lose sight of the original letter, ABSTRACTION IS THE GOAL.
