Wait For Me

Arts University Bournemouth graduation project. Arthur and Annie say farewell to their son William as he leaves for war in the winter of 1914. Drifting further and further apart, the couple try to cope with their son’s absence while he struggles with life in the trenches.

Roles: Head of Department Editor | Script Supervisor
Film: Super 16MM

Wait for Me was a graduation film which amalgamated three years of skills, experience and past productions during my specialist study of editing at university. I was the head of department for editing, as well as a script supervisor on whilst on set. Pre-production occupied the span of just over a year, between May 2013 to April 2014. A large amount of crew and head of department meetings took place during this time. In consideration to the scale and ambition of the project, attentive preparation and communication between each department was fundamental, especially due to the decision of filming with Super 16mm, (except for the VFX shots which were shot on Arri Alexa).

The graduation film was shot over the period of a week of 10 hour days during April 2014, using professional actors and many extras. As a script supervisor on set, I analysed the camera angles with ‘editor’s eyes,’ and made sure the camera crew would not miss any shots which would either leave plot holes or linking movements. Working on set allowed me to gain a widened conceptualisation of the production, so that when the time came for me to take on my main role as editor, I would have a premature perception of the flow and feel of the story. It also enabled me to have a pre-understood scope of the infrastructure of shots from each scene and characters during the week on production.

Post-production was scheduled to run for two months until final picture lock. I worked closely with the director, collaborating on creative ideas and responding to their feedback with every rough cut I completed until we reached the final outcome. The producer and director of photography also provided me with feedback to work on. Once the picture locked version was completed, I sent it to London to be graded by a previous graduate who then sent the cut back with all of the graded footage for me to sync with the sound mix.

I worked to tight deadlines and with many like-minded creatives under senior specialists within the film industry who mentored the crew, including myself, on this project. I was very focused on matching the visuals to the true tone of the film, bringing the story to life from the script. ‘Wait for Me’ was premiered at the British Film Institute in London before being selected by the university to be launched on a worldwide film festival circuit. This included being part of the Official Selection at the Imperial War Museum Short Film Festival in London.
