Objective \
To create a visual system across a range of formats and deliverables using a film festival as a vehicle for conception and creation.
Project \
For this multi-day festival I chose to highlight the coming-of-age films of director Louis Malle. The five chosen films feature child protagonists dealing with a shifting world of lost childhood innocence and the dark truths found in the adult world. This is the theme that guided all of my conceptual and design decisions, from the title and logo to the unsettling and worn style of the photography. All final deliverables are housed in a container that also works within context and concept.
Festival Title and Logo Explorations
Using hand-drawing, low-tech transfer methods and photoshop I explored a variety of titles and logo designs that would brand my festival. Eventually I narrowed down to three logos and chose the middle one. The title of the festival relates to the edge between the happy veneer of childhood and the darkness of adulthood each of Malle's protaganists faced in his coming-of-age films.
Photo Style
Much of the photography used in the posters, ads, catalogue, etc. was taken by me and used to convey a sense of the overall festival theme. I treated the photos to look unsettling, worn and a bit dreamlike to convey the loss of childhood innocence.

The Festival Catalogue
The catalogue includes all the information about the festival itself as well as descriptions of the director and the movies being shown. These spreads are a sample of the final book.

Material Components
Other elements the festival required were tickets for each movie screening, special edition DVD packaging for the five movies (including a booklet summarizing each one), commercial products relating to the themes, and a set of stationary.
