Knit Studio 1 Color Matching

The first project for Philadelphia Univeristy's Knit Design Studio 1 asked students to match colors and recreate color interactions from a chosen image using jersey, single tuck, and double tuck stitches on the Passap knitting machine. I matched yarns to the colors in the image by mixing several strands together. The migration of the whales in my chosen image is at once calming, orderly, and yet filled with chaos. The crashing waves, the rows of white whales, and the serene blues and greens captured in the image are a compelling combination of energies. Using stripes already established in the image, I attempted to play with the notions or order and disorder. Working with the Passap’s ability to create uniformly ordered stitches, I decided to contrast that with irregular/regular stripes and tuck stitches to create texture and an idea of movement.
