Audio Description Only Cinema

When the blind or visually impaired visit a cinema, they often require audio description. This is usually provided through a set of headphones that plays the description in-between gaps in the dialogue. Although this is a brilliant way to make the movies more accessible, it can still be seen as a physical barrier between the viewer and the atmosphere of the movies.“Audio description only cinema” removes the headphones by playing the dialogue and the audio description through the same speakers. Allowing blind viewers to really immerse themselves in the cinema going experience.

I created a website, posters and tickets for the events, all tailored towards a blind and partially sighted audience. The posters and tickets had high contrast colour schemes, different shapes and only featured braille and the websites address. The braille is solid ink, created using an over printer. This ink is softer than traditional braille but doesn’t smudge and is very durable.

The website features tagged images that can be read by an e-reader, those not using an e-reader have to play a “mini-game” to find out information. This inconveniences sighted people in a relatively fun way, while making sure the blind can access the information as easily as possible.
