A "non-place" in Porto
48 Hours Competition

"The proposal is to be located in Porto, near Ponte do Infante’s exit, in a predominantly residential area. The boundaries of the plot are to the North the Rua Alexandre Herculano, and to the South Passeio das Fontainhas. Being a key spot to Porto, since it serves as an entry point to the city, it seems to us that it is of extreme relevance to signalize the entrance to the city.

In spite of being limited to the described area above the intervention is encouraged to be extended to the adjacent area, although punctually.

It is of the utmost importance to solve the corner which seems to be forgotten. Therefore the architect’s work should embrace not only a direct answer to the request but also a critical opinion to the development of the city.

That being we expect that the competitors propose the most adequate program having in consideration the physical, political and social constraints (keep in mind that the area is nearby to the Bairro Alexandre Herculano)."
Proposal

The proposal fills an urban void, which previously was part of a block. The building redesigns a public space, offering experiences and crossing two streets. The piece allows permeable crossing, offering different open areas and green spaces, in a controlled way, tearing punctually exterior views. The outer volumetric fills the street corner and closes it in a filled space and empty marked by courtyards and a contemplative path. The area without specific program shaped by light invites you to stay during the crossing of this " non-place".
