Character Design- Jammi

Jammi Kahn is an Indian- British teenage rocker set in 1970s England. Jammi emigrated from India to England with his five bothers and sisters and his parents, to start their traditional Indian sweets business.

Jammi, being the eldest of the six children and the only non- identical sibling, is forever being given the eldest child responsibilities of looking after his brothers and sisters and also helping out with the business. However he is a typical teenager that desires to rebel against his parents. He does this by trying to pursue a career in becoming the ultimate Sitarist of all time! His idols are the Beatles, The Who and Led Zeppelin, to name a few. However his musical Gods are The Rolling Stones.
The colours used in the design of my character are a mixture of earthy green, brown and red tones as well as electric neon greens and blues. I decided to use the earthy tones, as I wanted to give the impression that he was organic in a sense that he has not been tarnished yet by the rock and roll lifestyle.  For the Sitar, I chose the colour red, as in India red means purity, which ties into Jammi’s innocence and naivety. The Sitar is not just a fashion statement, it’s his security blanket. The yellow high lights symbolize his flicker of rebellion and creative side.

Jammi’s clothes are also full of intentional decisions made for his character. His homemade neon Rolling Stones t-shirt that fits quite snugly was designed to show his attempts at being a rocker and trying to break free from tradition and his parent’s reign (even if that means he has to make his own t-shirt when his parents won’t let him buy one). The psychedelic bleach wash flared jeans set him in his time period.
India and England have very different climates therefore when Jammi moved from India he found England extremely cold. Therefore he wears a faded pink hand-me-down skivvy, which he wears underneath his Rolling Stones t-shirt. Although the temperature is completely different from what Jammi is used to, he doesn’t feel the cold on his feet therefore he wears his cloth sandals all the time. I chose to colour these earthy green to bring back the organic roots he has and because sandals were in fashion at the time.
Jammi’s hair is one of the main features, and what represents his character. It’s the one thing he prides himself in, apart from being a really good Sitar player. His hair flows in a way that gives the impression that he is very easy-going, friendly and has a soft soul. The slight curl that shades his left eyebrow shows his shy side, being in a new country and trying to come out of his shell.
His face shows his innocence through his wide green eyes, but also optimism. His attempted moustache was included in his design, as I really wanted to be more realistic with his age and his cultural heritage.
It symbolizes maturity and the progression from boyhood t becoming a young man. His long thin limbs were designed to make it so he could reach each string on the Sitar and to play is fast.  I gave Jammi a chubby torso to show that not all rock stars have to be stick thin, living on cigarettes and alcohol. Jammi appreciates food and loves to eat, especially the homemade sweets.
