Ideation in Design: Breakfast on the go for Teens!

Five Ideations Methods for Product/Service Design

Opportunity Statement: Breakfast on the go for Teens.

1) List of ideas
Morning Pocket: Breakfast case with key-holder to fit in front pocket of backpack
Fruit Dice: Breakfast case (like for eyewear) with pre-cut fruits
Wake me Hat: Breakfast hat with a case on top and the snack inside the case
Snack Pack: Breakfast pack with straps (like a bra) but to wear on chest (and not in the back) for easy access
Banana Belt: Banana-shape belt bag for breakfast

2) Eliminating a constraint: "not necessarily for teenagers"
Get Shit Done: (a rectangular case with a row of 3 mini glass shots + 3 bakeries for fasting diet. For example: 1 lemon juice, 1 hot chocolate / black coffee, 1 orange juice + 3 mini croissants filled with chocolate, jam, butter or pieces of pre-cut fruits)
Elevator snack: it's a 3 floor snack with 1st floor for toast, 2nd floor for nutella, 3rd floor for UHT milk
Ice cream stick: round-shape bread filled with jam (or banana bread) supported with ice cream stick for quick one hand use
Tray: T-shape breakfast tray with a glass-shape for the base to fit in the car where you should put your coffee
Thugday: Breakfast mug with oatmeal or hot drinks inside that would count your calories intake.

3) Making an analogy: what if eating on the go was like (i) getting ready to exercise or (ii) doing morning make up for an adult woman?
Rubicube: (i) breakfast kit with 3 boxes: one with bagel & eggs mini pizza (solid food), one box to sip a hot chocolate, one box to sip a yogurt
Wake up Watch: (i) breakfast as a wearable device (like a large watch) to eat with the other hand
Rollin': (ii) breakfast case to roll and fit in the glove compartment in the car to eat when parents are driving
Wake up Bento: (ii) breakfast like a makeup palette (circle shape) with toast, square butter, hard-cook eggs peeled
Beltfast: (i) breakfast boxes to fix into a belt around the hips with pack of juice, milk and chocolate bread.

4) Exaggerating: "teenagers need to eat their breakfast in 10 fruits or 10 bites".
Allo Morning: Breakfast case as a very tick (with depth) iPhone case to fix behind the iphone for easy access on hand of fruits
Wicked Banana (existing product): a banana that has been filled in its center with chocolate and closed with wax
Smart Mug: Oatmeal mug that could warm by itself and need to be charged in the car (via car lighter) or at home the day before
Splash: 2 floors container with cereals (1st floor) that would fall into UHT milk (2nd floor) just by withdrawing a trapdoor
Smoothie: 10 fruits mixed to drink with a straw

5) Getting in the garbage
breakfast snack that requires to squeeze the juice of the fruit on the way to school
breakfast snack with knives to cut the fruits and bread in the car / in public transportation
breakfast snack that require to get the drink (milk, juice) from a drive-trough station
breakfast snack that is a bag-pack with a very large and long straw for immediate consumption
breakfast snack to eat with a straw, as a mix of fruits paste.

Selection criteria and ideas selected:

Most useful:
Tray: (T-shape breakfast tray with a glass-shape for the base to fit in the car where you should put your coffee) for teenagers who go to school by car with their parents. It's a simple way to put the breakfast on a plate (with an "arm" that fits into where you put the drinks in most cars). The teenager can then enjoy his/her breakfast on the way. It is very useful as it can also be used by adults anytime they need to eat in their car (for fast food drive-through for instance). So far, you can only put standard size drinks in your car.

Most desirable:
Get Shit Done: (a rectangular case with a row of 3 mini glass shots + 3 bakeries for fasting diet. For example: 1 lemon juice, 1 hot chocolate / black coffee, 1 orange juice + 3 mini croissants filled with chocolate, jam, butter or pieces of pre-cut fruits). It may be the most desirable routine from parents' perspectives, not necessarily from teenagers views (they may want to switch with the "Wicked Banana"). It is the most desirable to me as the user engages in a healthy morning routine with the most essentials in smaller quantities. It is also very quick to eat (as it is small quantity) and intuitive.

Easiest to use:
Banana Belt: (Banana-shape belt bag for breakfast) where parents put the breakfast inside (biscuits and juice with straw). It is the easiest to use as the functionality (belt) is pretty straightforward. The teenager can eat what's inside on the way to school, in the car or in public transportation.

Most functional:
Snack Pack: (Breakfast pack with straps (like a bra) but to wear on chest (and not in the back) for easy access). This is by far the most functional as it does not involve any specific requirements in terms of food but focus only on the functionality of the container. The Snack Pack can be worn like a bag pack but on chest for immediate consumption. Might not be very desirable for teenagers as they may want something more fashionable.

Most sustainable
Fruit Dice: (Breakfast case with pre-cut fruits) is probably the most sustainable as it is somehow desirable for parents (who want their children to eat healthy) and it is functional as there is no need to cut all the fruits in the morning routine. The fruits are already cut into pieces with a certain variety and can be consumed with a furnished fork as well. The cost are limited and the only focus is to find appropriate vendors for fruits that can be stored.

Reflection

I found this assignment very challenging as it helps to step out from your preconceived ideas of breakfast. It also requires to engage physically and emotionally to come out with new ideas. You cannot be detached.
I also found it difficult as there are obvious judgments that you can't help thinking and they will come to mind along the way.
I could also focus more on container rather than breakfast itself but I found both very intrinsically linked.
The getting in the garbage category isn't as obvious as it may seem at first as it may be a very bad idea to me (eg for healthy reasons) but not for someone else.
However, by far, the most challenging part of the assignment is that it also requires to bring your own empirical life perspectives about a supposedly simple and non-controversial subject as "breakfast". But it is far from the truth. It involves that you bring on the table what your values are about educating children, eating healthy, having a morning routine, transportation and so on... All these values are obviously related to your culture, nationality, race, ethnicity, level of income, number of children etc. This exercise is probably even more challenging and interesting when sharing it with a very diverse group of people. The outcomes in terms of ideas will be tremendously great!
