Built and Pulled Costumes
Costumes are one of my greatest passions, and with these images you can see some of the productions that I have worked on.
This image shows Joanne, Bobby, and Sara from NWOSU's production of the musical Company.  We chose to set the production in the 1970s which is the period in which it was originally released on Broadway.  The suit for the character of Bobby was pulled from our costume shop and matched with images from the period.  The dress for JoAnne who is in the black dress with sheer sleeves was designed and built for this show.  I based the dress off of images from the period, largely that of the character of Endora on Bewitched.  The dress is multi-layered: black satin underneath with a sheer polyester layer gathered over the top.  The sleeves bell out, while there is a hand sewn black bead detail at the waist of the dress.  I think that this costume is one of the best examples of my work as both a costume designer and as a seamstress.  The actress raved about the dress.
this image is from the Musical Company.  The characters of Peter, Susan, Marta, and Bobby were all outfitted in period attire.  The costumes for all but Marta were pulled and found in the costume shop and in donations to the costume shop and matched to period photographs.  the costume for Marta was built from period fabric, which is a brightly printed double knit.  Her pants are green bell bottoms.  A matching band was made for her hair.  This was a challenging show to costume since it was a large cast.
This image shows my design for ursula the sea witch.  I built this costume by creating my own pattern.  The tentacles were stuffed and a copper wire was strung inside so that they would swing as I walked.  The underside of the tentacles was a lavender satin with seams every 3 inches as well as purple painted circles for the suckers.  This was a challenging costume which showcases my skills in costume design and fabrication.
This costume was taken from the 1960s.
These costumes were created for Vietnam 101: The War on Campus set in the 1960s.
This production still shows the costumes from :The Blue Haired Belles produced on the NWOSU stage in April of 2010.  This sho was set in the 1990s.
This image is from Nowhere Fast set in the 1930s in Texas.  The brown dress is one of my favorite costumes I have ever built.  I was able to match the dress almost exactly to the sketch that I was provided by the student designer.  The costume was built using fabric matched to period and then using modern patterns adapted to the style of vintage ones.
This is a second image of costumes from Nowhere Fast
This image is of a costume I made for myself as Minnie Mouse.  I built the head out of tape and wire.  I then paper mached the form.  Once dry the head was sanded and painted.  Finally sheer black fabric was added to the open mouth and eye sockets so that there was some visibility.  I also built the dress adapted from modern patterns to look like Minnie's dress.  I think that this costume is a strong example of ingenuity in fabrication techniques.
