Parsons Challenge 2 – Circle of Achievement

For my second piece for Parsons Challenge, Singapore remains as the subject and setting. Singapore, often overlooked because of its size, has produced many significant and talented individuals over the past fifty years. These success stories have emerged from fields like sport, media, investment, economics, culture, technology, the arts and education. Given Singapore’s multi-racial composition, these successful people serve as a vibrant portrait of Asia.

The circle is employed in this piece to symbolise unity among people with diverse backgrounds, regardless of race, gender and religion. A mosaic of triangle tiles portraying recognised individuals from various fields depicts their connectedness through a common desire to achieve greatness and success. Ultimately, besides gaining personal success, these individuals have placed Singapore in the regional or, even, global spotlight. With Singapore’s first Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, at the centre, he and others have greatly contributed to the country’s much admired progress from a fishing village to a modern Singapore.

“I am tomorrow, or some future day what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day”. As per the words of James Joyce, achievements reaped today are due to efforts sowed in the past, and success can be enjoyed later only if hard work is done now.
