ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Free Arts Day Program provides “pop-up” arts festivals sponsored by a corporation, group, or individual. Kids pair 1-on-1 with volunteer buddies for a day of art making. Each event offers youth, ages 6-13, the opportunity to explore a variety of art materials with the support of a caring adult. Events include lunch or a snack and culminate in an interactive live musical, dance or theater performance.
OBJECTIVE
The objective in the art workshop is to create model projects for the Free Arts Days by following these criteria.
The project will;

1. Follow a theme (i.e. Safari, Underwater, medieval, extraterrestrial).
2. Incorporate at least one material that the kids would to have access to at school or at home.
3. Use donated or currently stocked materials for remaing materials use.
4. Allow for individual expression within the parameter of the model porject.
5. Be easily understood by an adult with limited experience in crafting.

100 Versions
Seeing 100 versions of the project I designed walk out of a Free Arts Day was extraordinary. For the children participating in the Free Arts Day the projects they take home becomes a token in which they associate creativty, imagination, community, partnership, and making.

Manipulating Materials and the Value of Crafting
There are four projects at each Free Arts Day and the children rotate to different stations with their adult buddy. The projects are desgined to be completed within a 30 minute window. The goal is for the children to be introduced to a new method of making or material. A material that they may not have access to at school or at home.

One-to-one
The children who paritcipate in the Free Arts Day are paired with an adult buddy. This buddy may have little or no experince interacting with children or making crafts. It is exciting to watch the children learning from the adult and the adult learning from the child. The individualized attention builds communication skills and allows for the child to feel entirly special.

Setting Parameters
When parameter are set with a sample project and a procedure sheet it allows for the child to be imaginative without a project becomeing overwleming.
