In regards to art, restrictions are often viewed as limiting, hindering true artistic expression. However, it is through constraint that new ideas and ways of expression can emerge.
This piece, titled "Skeletal Restriction" is a 15-foot long charcoal drawing created using a restriction. I bound my hands together and attached a drawing tool that consisted of a wooden dowel, and a ceramic head that enabled multiple pieces of charcoal to be attached to the top of it. The restriction prevented precise, delicate marks from being made, and forced me to draw more gesturally from the form.
After the initial marks were made, I went over my drawing without restrictions, sanding, erasing, and overlaying marks to create atmosphere, space, and pentimenti.
