Extreme Natural Phenomenon Paper Cutout

This piece explores the ongoing effects of global warming on Alaska.

The depiction guides the viewer’s eye from the ominous factories, at the bottom of the cutout, up through the Alaskan environment that is enveloped by the smoke. The rising global temperature causes the loss of sea ice resulting in vast number of Odobenus rosmarus (Walrus) gathering on Alaska beaches.  Many carcasses remain on these beaches as the walruses are often trampled to death by the crowding. Global warming also increases the proliferation of spruce bark beetle on the Alaskan trees. In addition causes cycles of freezing and thawing of the permafrost results in extensive damage to transportation infrastructure and a phenomena known as the drunken forest – when the altered soil conditions cause trees to sink into the ground.
