Wearable & Portable Backpack Office

My product is a Wearable & Portable Backpack Office. Its main purpose is to contain work related objects such as books, folders and laptops. My Portable Office is designed for people who work on the go. Its solid 3D form allows you to work straight off its surfaces, this design lets you set up wherever you may work best such as cafes or in public areas like parks. The extendable desk provides an area for laptops or notebooks to be placed whilst working. The office also contains two storage areas so that work can be kept organised whilst travelling. There is even a small chalkboard on the back panel of the backpack so that notes and reminders can be written up as you work. The backpacks metal buckles allow the Wearable & Portable Office to hold a range of heavy objects. The front panel is aligned with magnets, providing security whilst travelling as well as the two large straps which go around the bag to help keep the front panel firmly in place
I created this piece because of a brief set by my university, the brief was to make a "Wearable Container". I quickly came to the decision of wanting to create a backpack because of particular pieces I had seen by the designer Cassandra Verity Green whilst I was down in London. She created a range of transparent goldfish bowl bags which I found absolutely fascinating. Straight away I knew I wanted to develop a backpack which had this transparent aspect to it. Backpacks are normally about concealing your goods, however, I liked the idea of having a sort of openness to the piece, almost having your objects on display. I also liked the idea of having a solid bag rather than a soft more typical material backpack. As I study away from home, I don’t really have as much money as I would like to spend on medium, so many of the materials used in my product were actually recycled. My tutor was able to provide me with some free clear acrylic sheets which were previously used for containing an artist's work, so I used that for the transparent panels. I decided that wood would contrast well with the acrylic so I used leftover plywood which was in my classroom. I am a big fan of recycling as I find it is resourceful and affordable. The shape and function came later on in the development process. I note down and save photos constantly, so the form came together by mixing initial shapes together.
