Cycling Tips for Bikers on Martha's Vineyard

Thomas "Tom" Tate has spent more than three decades leading operations at Tate Builders, Inc., a custom-home design business based in Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard. Beyond his professional activities, Thomas E. Tate enjoys biking around the island.

Individuals looking to move around Martha’s Vineyard have a few options, including personal cars and transport provided by the Martha's Vineyard Regional Transit Authority. Those interested in enjoying the island’s beauty at a slower pace often opt to travel by bike. Martha’s Vineyard features nearly 45 miles of bike trails, including the popular 18-mile round trip from Vineyard Haven to Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and back.

When cycling on the island, bicyclists must remember to adhere to a few safety rules. First and foremost, bikers must ride with traffic at all times. While families and partners can occupy two personal lanes at a time, they should assume a single-file formation to allow faster traffic to pass at a comfortable distance. All turns and stops on a bike must be signaled using hands, unless safety requires both hands to remain on handlebars. Finally, all cycling occurring after dark should be signaled using front and rear reflectors. Riders must also wear clothing or side reflectors to create visibility from all angles.
