Writing Response 1: Trump the Media and Republicans

This cartoon is addressing the media’s obsession with Donald Trump and his demeaning insults. It depicts Donald Trump being chased by reporters demanding that he say something insulting, while the Republican elephant stands in the back, angry at the proceedings. Created during the current political campaign, this cartoon is directed toward voting-eligible Americans. The author, Daryl Cagle, is an American editorial cartoonist, the publisher of Cagle.com and owner of a newspaper. He writes mostly political cartoons relating to current events. Cagle is portraying the absurdness of the media and public’s obsession with Trump’s insults, rather than support of the Republican Party. Combining words and images, Cagle effectively portrays his message. While the words take precedence over the image itself, they rely on each other to effectively get the message across. The cartoon is depicted in a realistic way, other than the elephant, which is a representation of the Republican Party. This could allude to the idea fact that it’s happening currently. The irony of the situation lies in the fact that they continue to support Trump. Primarily serious, the tone of this cartoon reflects the seriousness of the issue at hand- the future leader of America. Contained within the scene are Donald Trump, the Republican elephant, and reporters of all gender and race. The variety of characters found within the reporters shows that it’s not just one group of people who are supporting Trump and obsessing over his idiocy, but all of them. Since Cagle explicitly defines the characters depicted in this cartoon, the reader knows exactly who the topic of the cartoon is- Donald Trump.
