Brief:

Create a new visual language for film advertising using typography for the films Inception, Interstellar and Momento.

Inception:

Inception was based on the concept of the dream architecture and the different levels within the dream in which the characters go into.
Limbo was not included as a level as it is formed from the subconscious mind and therefore not designed. The type is formed from laser cut ‘blueprints’ from plans found the University Library. The layers can be de-constructed and interchanged so that the audience can design their own levels.
Interstellar:

This design is based on the struggle Cooper has in the film to communicate with his Daughter, Murph. The bookshelf becomes a primary focus in the film as it is his way of trying to communicate to Murph by using gravity.
The word Interstellar becomes clearer, and easier to decipher reflecting how Murph eventually works out the binary code sent to her. The letters are vacformed from laser cut letters set at different heights.

Interstellar Alternative:

This design was the initial idea which experimented with flour particles forming the type to relate to the binary dust suspended by Cooper through gravity.

Momento:

The final design was inspired by the complexity of the main character who has a condition in which he cannot create new memories. The only way he can remember is through documenting key information as soon as possible through the use of tattoos and Polaroids photographs.
By using solar paper we experimented with different exposure times as well as using letters made out of different materials to see how it reacted. This materials research helped to formule a methodology for exposure for each row of each letter. The final design uses the concept of how he formulates new memories for a short period of time before eventually forgetting them, which is illustrated by the exposure of the letters from left to right.
The needles and string link to the characters irrational personality and his ever going battle to try and chain together memories in his quest to find out who murdered his wife
