Paintings from high school (2011-2015)

These are 4 paintings I picked out from the myriad of paintings I created during high school. Looking back at these paintings, I recall the process of reflection that took place while painting over each layer. The execution of these pieces ranged from 3 to 21 hours to complete, but took many nights of reflection to completely figure out how I wanted to paint.
"Weaving into Reality" acrylic 48"x36"

This piece illustrates waking up and falling asleep. My intent was to illustrate this transition in one piece. I also took into thought the concepts yin and yang, describing how opposite forces are complementary, interconnected and independent in the natural world. I wanted the two transitions to be metaphors of yin and yang. The two stages interact, through the golden weave, to form as a dynamic system rather than as two parts. The Yang "sunny side" figure is in a white daylight. The yin "shady side" figure is in a yellow light and emphasis on shadow to indicate night. Light and Shadow were a focus of this piece. The golden layer acts as a dream. The thread wraps around the figures while they also disappear in and out of the background and start to merge with the bottom layer rather than as a cover. I wanted to depict dreams by showing it as a part of reality that interacts one and one's surroundings.
"Inversion" oil 24"x18"

For this painting, I depicted a figure laying from the top of the piece, almost like hanging over the edge of a bed. I wanted this piece to show both reality and dream in the same time frame. I wanted the angle of the figure to lead down to the dream where some places I keep detail in texture while others I left blank.

"Exposed Insecurities" acrylic 30"x40"

While I was painting this piece, I wanted to focus on the use light and body language. I wanted to demonstrate a figure, her back being open to light and to the viewer showing a personal side to the viewer. The light and pattern on the couch show personality, the suppressed insecurities of the figure being shown. The fact that they are exposed is the effects dreams have on myself when I dream, where I have to accept the explosion and become one with the second realm of reality, dreams.

"Activation Synthesis Theory" acrylic 36"x48"

For this piece, I was focusing on a surreal view on time. I wanted to show two different moments of time, at the same time. This depicts a transition from being conscious to falling asleep, reading from right to left. The golden weave represents the dream, or middle stage. It starts as a a design that goes in and around the figure and background. It also disappears into some places. The weave also turns into a figure, that starts to form on it's own. I wanted to depict the mind taking imagery and creating story on its own.
