A journey through space, 2015
For the projection mapping part of this work I wanted to make it visually more interesting than what I have done previously, often having the same video on one shape and nothing else. As it was going to be for my university degree show I wanted it to be more grand than previous work. This time I played more with the technique of projection mapping, having only certain parts projected onto, different videos playing at the same time and a gradual build up of projections. The combination of shapes and projection counteracts the typical conventions of projection whereby the image is presented in a rectangular format. By having the projection only on the shape it manipulates the framing of the image, you don’t know what else is happening beyond the frame. The content and visuals within the piece I feel in some ways reflect the scientific rationalization of nature. My piece creates an aesthetic experience creating the feeling of awe and wonder, from the kaleidoscopic imagery and the subject matter of space itself.
Although the themes of manipulation are still very much present in this work, it also speaks a lot about technique and technical competence that I possess. It’s also about making, the hand made 3D shapes creates a tension between the man made, digital video of space, something that is so natural and uncontained. The 3D element has been very important throughout my practice and has worked well as a tool of manipulation but also as a way of presenting imagery, differently, challenging the norm.
