A prototype stool was to be produced using design influence from an existing furniture designer's creative work. Chosing to follow Jasper Morrison's simplistic and functional approach, the Stair Stool concept was developed. The brief was to create a functional stool that could be used in public area's to tranform a staircase into a functional seating area. The stool needed to be stackable in order to pack away neatly, so a movable slat backrest was developed into the design. This allows users to either sit on the solid timber cube or fold up the slatted backrest.
Using a single sheet of Construction Plywood twenty one profiles were cut using the CNC Router and then laminated together using steel rods as connections to produce the cube stair stool. The design is extremely functional and comfortable to sit on. Each stool is 300mm wide, 150mm high and 350mm deep. The stool stacks easily and can be placed together to create seating options for two or a larger group.
