Musicolour in Two Movements (2013) Interactive Sound

Have you always wondered “what does music look like?” or “what does art sound like?”. Those were the questions I posed as the basis of an Interactive sound project for when I was studying abroad in the University of Plymouth (Media Arts BA)
"Musicolour in Two Movements" is an interactive two-part installation that plays with sound and colour, and invites the spectator to play a song on the piano or to draw and witness the infinite possibilities of the interaction between painting and music. It was made possible through the use of the MaxMSP software.

"First Movement: Sound to Colour" was created entirely by me with the help of a few teachers. It consists of turning musical notes into colours. Using a MIDI keyboard, each key triggers a colour of my choice on a white screen – the canvas. The colour comes out in the shape of a circle or a square and the choice of one of these two shapes is left to the player’s criteria. The result that I want to achieve with this is the chance to visualize your music through your own painting, the resulting composition of colours.
"Second Movement: Colour to Sound" was inspired by Blair Neal's video on Vimeo "Color a Sound". Using the MaxMSP patch that he made available to the public, I downloaded it, tried to understand it and used it mainly to have fun and learn how it was constructed, simply because I loved the idea and though it would be a great experience for the project.
