My client needed a realistic illustration of a parathyroid, not one of the more readily recognizable parts of the anatomy. After acquiring some decent reference materials, I started with a tight pencil drawing which I scanned and used as the base art in Photoshop. I work in as many layers as required, thereby leaving plenty of room for edits, client changes, or any other task that would be fairly difficult if the illustration was already flattened. I also normally work at a resolution that is significantly higher than requested since clients are famous for changing their minds and asking for something the size of a billboard six months down the line. That way I'm covered and the client is happy. I am showing both the pencil and the finished illustration here.
