Ceramic Stoneware and Gold Leaf
20 inches

A cairn is a stack of stones set up as a landmark. Often, they serve as trail markers on mountainsides and uplands. Cairns vary in complexity from loose conical rock piles to delicately balanced sculptures.

Here, I examine the ritual of forming "rocks" from clay. Then, I gather and organize my collection. Finally, I stack and push the oblong limits of gravity in a balancing act.
