RMIT’s Industrial Design program calls for a final year honours thesis project. As the project extends over two semesters, with an indepth research component, it was important to me to work with a topic I have a passion for. Grounded looks at the nature of Melbourne coffee culture, which allowed me to combine a number of my interests; the nature of our everyday lives, culture, human behaviour, the relationships between people, objects and space, oh and coffee. Having years of experience as a barista and a well formed love and appreciation for coffee culture, this choice of topic failed to surprise anyone who knows me.

Throughout the year the project evolved into designing filter coffee brewing equipment that gave specialty coffee a new identity in Melbourne, one that is approachable and moves away from the complex, fragile and scientific aesthetic that leads the current market.
