An American Werewolf in London

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON

Released in 1981, An American Werewolf in London  has become a cult classic, and an icon in the horror genre. 35 years later and its visual effects have stood the test of time. This film deserved a new look considering its success and recognition within the industry. I redesigned the films branding which led to packaging for its anniversary re-release.

I began by analyzing the films overarching theme of duality. This led to further research into the field of psychology. I became fascinated with Rorschach Ink tests and after countless trials I was able to create the wolf image seen on the cover. The original image was completely analog and only took minor digital tweaking to create the final result. While it was possible to create the image digitally, I felt that taking an analog approach was the most genuine way to create the ink blot. I had to develop a process that would allow me to force the final image while maintaining subtle
organic mistakes.
PACKAGING

The packaging was designed with the user’s experience in mind at all times. The clear outer depicts the wolf ink blot design while the actual case includes the title of the film. As the clear portion is removed the ink blot floats over the type resembling clouds passing over the moon. When the customer opens the case they are greeted with a blood spattered pop out housing the bu-ray disc.
TEASER TRAILER

For the release I created a teaser announcement trailer that would incorporate the dark humor found in the film. By featuring songs originally featured in the movie I was able to lighten up the ultimately dreadful typography and imagery.
