Martyrdom Typeface

OPPORTUNITY
Design an original display typeface.

SOLUTION
The typeface I created is called Martyrdom. It is a display typeface designed for the international Christian ministry called The Voice of the Martyrs. The organization is dedicated to the supporting, praying over, and raising awareness of the persecuted church all around the world. The intention behind the design and aesthetic of Martyrdom is to convey the outward fragility and inner strength of the persecuted Christian church. Key features in this typeface are stroke weight, continuity, fluid movement, and sharp serifs. The stroke weight extends from mid-width to thin-width in all letterforms, numerals, and punctuation. Continuity is presented through the consistent points of injury, as seen in the majuscule A, H, and 4, and in the incomplete loops of majuscule O, Q, and 8. Fluid movement is seen in the curvilinear nuances throughout the complete body of work. The sharp serifs are inspired by the crown of thorns that Christ wore on the cross.

Many features of my typeface are based off of hand-carved letterforms, the Early Church, and elements from typefaces such as Miller, Baskerville Original, and Garamond PremierAdditionally, Martyrdom is a spiritual typeface in that it displays the “soul” of the suffering Christians who have endured all degrees of pain for their faith in Jesus Christ.
