Reading Workbook Page, Grade 5
Art Direction and Design by Robin Benjamin

The student workbook pages go along with the subject matter of a specific story from the student book. They were created in a 4 page lesson plan. The "look" of the 4 pages had to be similar in some way so that they would hang together as a unit.

For the page below, I was given the quilt artwork to include in the design. I hired an illustrator to do the "quilted" titling and spool of thread to go along with the quilt theme. On workbook pages the designers are often given several elements to work into a cohesive page design. These elements include art and/or photos along with the text, titles and space required for the students to write their answers.

I was only required to include one paragraph of text and three areas designated for student written response so I had a lot of "artistic freedom." I was able to design the page as one image instead of several small spot illustrations.
