Jerry & Maggie: This is not Photography

In 2012, I was extremely honored to have the opportunity of directing a documentary film on legendary husband & wife artist photographers Jerry Uelsmann & Maggie Taylor. Jerry’s work inspired me as a young photography student in high school and I was thrilled to be capture Jerry’s actual creative process in the darkroom as he worked through the evolution of an image. I was equally enthralled at falling in love with Maggie's amazing artwork and interweaving the story of thier creative processes and lives.

This film was the culmination of the Creative Inspirations film series that I helmed for lynda.com and we developed it full future length documentary. From the start, I was lucky to work with Nicole Lucas Haims we brought it as an story producer to help refine and expand our narrative approach. We reached out to Canon and got test units of the newly announced C-300 so we could test shooting natively at 12,000 ISO in a working darkroom environment. And we partnered with Sue Jacobs and Rani Sharone to develop a unique and intergrated sound and music accompaniment for the film. My incredible partner in crime Mia Shimabuku helped me the entire way and we were lucky to bring in the production prowess of Aron Ives. And of course, David Niles White was in the producer seat making things happen and as always Tracy Clarke and Nick Passick were in the editors seats!

We screened this film several times across the country and filled the theater at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival for both screenings. It's a wonderful and I'm super proud of it!
