Inspired by the disconnection between the movements of our fingers as we type and the result of this action, the program Traces suggests a different visualization of our language. By tracing lines between the pressed keys, Traces draws shapes that are the exact match of the movements of our fingers as we use a keyboard.
The project then evolved into a series of posters showing how the layout of a keyboard influences the shapes of the words that can be drawn. From a California job case, to an iPhone with the predictive text feature, the posters explore the various shapes words took over the years.
This piece aims to make the users aware of their behaviors and how they influence the shape of our language, as well as to emphasize the disconnection between our body and the text it produces.
