The article “How to Go Stargazing in London” detailed how to see the stars in a city with so much light pollution.
For the header image (right) I wanted to draw an instant link between the city and the skies. To spark readers’ imaginations I animated the stars to twinkle and glow. I took care to keep the GIFs below 2MB to make sure there was no loading lag time on mobile.
The brief called for illustrations for instructive purposes, enabling readers to locate the constellations described in the article. I illustrated these steps (below), and decided that animations would best support the copy: the arrows glow in succession, like neon signs guiding the reader from one star to the next.
