PechaKucha is a presentation format where presenters show 20 images, each for 20 seconds (6 minutes and 40 seconds in total) on topics ranging from their latest creative projects to recent vacation photographs. The format, which keeps presentations concise and fast-paced, powers multiple-speaker events called PechaKucha Nights (PKNs).
On Feb 20th, 2015 as PechaKucha celebrated its 12th anniversary, Asheville joined hundreds of cities around the world to celebrate PechaKucha Global Night with a series of presentations around the theme, “Design In Your City.” To help organize this global event in Asheville, ODDS volunteered to create the collaterals and promotional materials for the event.
The Asheville City Hall Building is a colorful, and eclectic Art Deco masterpiece designed by Douglas D. Ellington, an architect who came to Asheville in the mid-1920s. Ellington stated that the design was "an evolution of the desire that the contours of the building should reflect the mountain background," referring to the amazing scenery that surrounds Asheville and serves as the backdrop of City Hall.
Based on the historical significance and progressive design aspirations that the Asheville City Hall represents, we decided to use this building as the face of our communication. We combined this architectural masterpiece with the magical spirit of Asheville to create a poster design that was used to announce the PechaKucha global theme while representing the local flavor.
The poster design was also adapted into 20 sec animation videos that were used to introduce each presenter at PechaKucha Night Asheville. The music for these animation videos was composed by our talented friend, Marcos Harkness.
