NASA Lunar Sample Collection Bag

LUNAR SAMPLE COLLECTION BAG

My team was tasked with creating a lunar sample collection bag that could be easily transported by an astronaut after collecting samples, and easily stored when not in use.

We looked at current sample collection procedures and tools, and designed around an astronaut's restricted mobility, the limitations of the suit and gloves, usage versus storage, and shape versus orientation.

My final design proposal was a spring loaded lightweight bag that could be transported easily, providing no wrist strain and less arm strain. The circular shape would be more stable and more apt to stand up. The spring wire construction would enable the bag to be easily collapsed when not in use, and would enable it to stand upright even when empty while in the process of collecting rock samples.
