The Adjustable Floor Lamp

The Brief
For this project we were required to design a luminaire using LEDs as a source of light. Although the main output is the illuminance of the lamp, the form and aesthetics of the luminaire had to be considered.
The Concept
The typical table lamp inspired the design of this luminaire. The table lamp is adjustable and this is what led me to come up with this floor luminaire which can be adjusted to any height and angle as per the usage and requirement of the user. I have used wingnuts for the joints so that the lamp can be easily adjusted by hand. The last section of the lamp accommodates LED strips which are the main source of light. The lamp is designed in such a way that the wire is concealed within the adjustable sections of the luminaire's body.
The Challenges
I faced several challenges while constructing the structural part of the luminaire. The five sections had to be adjustable by hand and yet be strong enough to withstand the weight of the remaining sections. There was a big doubt as to whether the base would be stable if the sections were bent completely. Eventually the luminaire was constructed and proved to be a very stable yet sleek floor lamp.
Learnings
There was a lot of learning when it came to this project. Firstly I was able to understand the importance of the lumen output of a lamp, different types of lamps, their efficiencies and their illuminance. While building the structure of thr luminaire I was able to understand different types of joints and forms that would make the structure stable.
