Fluidity: A Spatial Design Project

Fluidity is part of a combined spatial design project titled "Rigidity/Fluidity" for the module DV3003 Spatial Design, where it seeks to divide spaces whilst complementing each other as opposites.

This idea of fluidity and empty space was heavily inspired from Kenya Hara’s quote:

The mechanism of communication is activated when we look at an empty vessel, not as a negative state, but in terms of its capability to be filled with something.”

Intrigued by the movement and weightlessness, we explored the notions of fluidity by creating a super light structure that is affected even by the slightest disturbance.

Drawing inspiration from the movement of lalang, which moves gracefully with the wind, we stripped balsa wood down to a milimeter and created a modular structure that can be easily re-positioned to contain or divide space. Fluidity here is experienced by walking pass the structure and seeing how one’s presence affects space.

*Lalang is the Malay name for Imperata Cylindrica (or Blady Grass) found in commonly in Southeast Asian countries.
*Fluidity is a group project by Benji Yip, Bryan Lim, Pek Shun Ping, Chou Yi Ting, Jamie Koh and Adel Lee for the module DV3003 Spatial Design
